Huber Scores Twice in Gopher Win Over No. 4 Bulldogs

11/15/2024 10:15:00 PM | Women's Hockey

DULUTH, Minn. - The No. 3 ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team notched a key WCHA conference win on Friday, taking down the No. 4 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 4-1 on the road. Minnesota moves to a 9-3-1 (5-3-1 WCHA) record on the season.

Junior defender Sydney Morrow opened up scoring on the day with a power play goal with 3:42 left in the first period, assisted by Chloe Primerano and Natalie Mlynkova. It was Morrow's fourth goal of the season and second on a power play. However, Minnesota Duluth quickly responded with a Hanna Baskin goal a little over a minute later. The game remained 1-1 heading into first intermission, with the Gophers outshooting the Bulldogs 22-9.

The Maroon and Gold extended their lead in the second period with scores from redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy and senior forward Ella Huber. Murphy found the back of the net after connecting with a back-handed Natalie Mlynkova pass. It was Murphy's 10th goal of the season and 80th of her career. With under two minutes left in the second period, and while Minnesota Duluth was on a power play, Huber deflected a Murphy pass into the Bulldog net, scoring her second shorthanded goal of the season. The Gophers led 3-1 heading into second intermission, having outshot the Bulldogs 16-13 throughout the period.

In the third period, Minnesota held the Bulldogs scoreless once again, sealing the top-four victory for the Gophers. The Maroon and Gold also added to its lead with five seconds remaining, thanks to an Ella Huber empty-net goal, her second goal of the game.

Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark moved to a 5-1-1 record in net for Minnesota. Clark finished the day with 27 saves and a .964 save percentage.

Quotable:
"This was a great effort here tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "Having over fifty shots, getting four [goals] on a really good goaltender and a tough defensive team. Just really proud of our group from the drop of the puck. Just three complete periods and they really put the hammer down, so it was a great win here on the road."
