Gophers Improve to 2-0 With Win Over Omaha

11/9/2024 5:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, Trey Edmonds had 12 points, and Lu'Cye Patterson added eight points, six rebounds, and six assists to help Minnesota (2-0) rally for a 68-64 win against Omaha (2-1) in front of a crowd of 8,019 at Williams Arena.

Garcia, a preseason All-Big Ten selection and All-America candidate who scored 30 points in the season-opener on Wednesday, once again led all scorers by making 9-of-16 field goals and 6-of-9 free throws. Edmonds came off the bench to go 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-6 at the line, recording his first double-figure scoring game as a Gopher. Patterson's performance was crucial down the stretch after Mike Mitchell Jr. was injured with 15:14 remaining. Minnesota made 25-of-55 (.455) field goals, but was just 3-of-17 (.176) from long-range and 15-of-26 (.577) at the line.

Minnesota fell behind 6-2 at the outset, but Garcia scored five points during a 7-0 Gophers run to pull ahead 9-6. Minnesota extended the lead to 16-11 on a pair of buckets from Edmonds and a three-pointer by Mitchell Jr., but the Mavericks tied the score at 16-16. Another trey from Mitchell Jr. and a three-point play by Garcia put the Gophers up 22-16, but Omaha responded with an 11-1 run to retake the lead, 27-23. Femi Odukale (four points, three assists, two rebounds, two steals) and Edmonds snapped a streak of 5:36 without a field goal with back-to-back jumpers to tie the score, and Odukale scored again after an Omaha three-point play to keep the Gophers within one at 30-29 with 1:35 remaining in the half. At the break, the Mavericks led, 33-30.

Garcia led the Gophers with 10 first-half points, while Edmonds added seven points in just nine minutes, and Mitchell Jr. had six points and a pair of assists. Minnesota made 12-of-31 (.387) first-half field goals, including just 2-of-11 (.167) three-pointers, and 4-of-10 free throws. Kamryn Thomas paced Omaha with 10 points at the break.

Omaha opened the second half by building its largest lead at 36-30, before Garcia's three-point play, followed by a pair of free throws cut it to 36-35 with 17:08 left. Parker Fox's dunk on an assist from Mitchell Jr. made it a 7-2 Gophers run, pulling them within one, and Fox then scored on a putback after a steal and missed layup by Mitchell Jr. Minnesota regained the lead on the play, but Mitchell Jr. injured his left ankle on the play and was helped off the court. The Mavericks used a 6-2 run to retake a 45-41 lead, but a jumper by Patterson and a layup from Garcia tied it at 45-all.

After a pair of free throws from Brennan Rigsby (six points, one steal) cut it to 49-47 with 10:24 remaining, Omaha maintained no more than a three-point lead for a five-minute stretch, but the Gophers finally broke through with a 7-0 run. Isaac Asuma (three points, two rebounds, one assist, one block) got things started with a three, just the third of the game for the Gophers, and Rigsby capped the run with a breakaway dunk to put Minnesota up 61-57 with 4:41 left. Marquel Sutton's three-pointer from the top of the key pulled Omaha back within one. Patterson's jumper in the paint gave the Gophers a 63-60 edge, and Garcia's putback layup made it 65-62, but the Mavericks answered each score to cut it back to a single point.

Omaha turned it over with just more than a minute remaining, and Minnesota called timeout with 57.1 on the clock. Garcia was fouled with 45.2 seconds remaining, but went 1-of-2 at the line to put the Gophers up just two, 66-64, and the Mavericks called a timeout with 0:40.2 left. Patterson defended a baseline jumper, grabbed the rebound, and was fouled with 19.6 seconds left. He hit both free throws in a double bonus situation for a 68-64 lead, Minnesota's largest since a 23-19 lead with 5:34 remaining in the first half. Omaha missed a flurry of three-point attempts on its final possession, and Minnesota held on for the four-point win. Fox finished with five points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and an assists for the Gophers, while Thomas led four Omaha players in double-figures with 14 points and Sutton finished with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Minnesota continues its season-opening six-game homestand when it plays host to North Texas at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 on B1G+.
