Gophers Rally Falls Short in First Loss of the Season
11/13/2024 10:13:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Dawson Garcia led all players with 24 points and eight rebounds, becoming the 47th Gophers player to reach 1,000 career points, but Minnesota (2-1) couldn't overcome a cold shooting night, as North Texas (3-0) held on for a 54-51 win at Williams Arena.
Garcia made 6-of-9 field goals, including both of his three-point attempts, and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line, but Minnesota finished the night just 15-of-48 (.313), including 6-of-23 (.261) from beyond the arc. Lu'Cye Patterson had nine points, and Trey Edmonds finished with six points and seven rebounds, but the Gophers' second-half rally from a nine-point halftime deficit fell just short.
North Texas jumped out to a 5-0 lead, as the Gophers missed their first four field goal attempts, but Brennan Rigsby's three-pointer pulled Minnesota within a point, 5-4, at the 15:41 mark, and a pair of free throws by Garcia kept it a one-point margin a minute later. The Mean Green put together an 10-0 run to build a 17-6 lead, as Minnesota endured a scoreless streak of 9:30, before Patterson hit two of three free throws with 5:15 remaining in the half. At that point, the Gophers were just 1-of-15 (.067) from the field, including 1-of-9 (.111) from long-range. Garcia knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 19-10, putting him over the 1,000-point milestone in his third season at Minnesota. Patterson's bucket with 0:13 left sent the teams to their locker rooms with the Gophers trailing, 23-14.
Garcia led Minnesota with six points and four rebounds at the break, while Patterson added four points, two boards, and an assist, and Frank Mitchell tied Garcia with four rebounds. The Gophers were 3-of-21 (.143) from the field, and Rigsby's early three-pointer was the lone make in 11 attempts, but they were 7-of-11 at the line. The Mean Green didn't fare much better, making 7-of-26 (.269) first-half field goals, including 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, but made 7-of-9 foul shots. Rondel Walker led UNT with nine points at the half.
Minnesota opened the second half with a quick 7-0 run on a jumper by Femi Odukale, a runner in the lane by Patterson, and a three-pointer from Garcia to cut UNT's lead to 23-21. The Mean Green pulled back in front, 28-21, but Isaac Asuma and Garcia each connected from behind the arc to cut the deficit to 30-27. Patterson added Minnesota's fourth trey of the half to pull the Gophers within 32-30 with 14:56 remaining, and an Edmonds layup kept Minnesota within 36-32. After the first-half shooting struggles, the Gophers began the second half by making seven of their first eight field goals, including all four three-point tries. With UNT holding a 38-32 advantage, Edmonds hit a pair of free throws, followed by a layup and a floater in the lane by Garcia to tie the score.
After UNT scored four straight to pull back in front, 42-38, Garcia hit a pair of technical foul free throws and Rigsby drained a three from in front of the Gophers bench to give Minnesota its only lead of the game, 43-42, with 7:27 left. But UNT responded with an 8-0 run to retake a 50-43 lead with 4:30 remaining. Garcia made it a five-point game with a pair of free throws, making him 8-of-8 at the line, and Edmonds hit a bank shot in the lane to cut it to 50-47. Trailing by five, Garcia drew a foul in the lane and made both free throws to trim it to 52-49 with 2:07 left. The Gophers held UNT scoreless on back-to-back possessions, and a Garcia putback layup cut the deficit to one point with 30.7 seconds left. The Gophers had a chance to pull out a win following a missed free throw by UNT with 20 seconds remaining, but Patterson's three-point attempt was off the mark and the Mean Green added a game-sealing dunk with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Walker led UNT with 14 points, while Brenen Lorient had nine points. The Mean Green were 20-of-53 (.377) from the field, including 5-of-17 (.294) from long-range, and 9-of-16 (.563) at the line. Minnesota held a slim 39-37 rebounding edge.
Minnesota continues its season-opening six-game home stand when it plays host to Yale at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 on BTN/B1G+.
