SERIES INFORMATION
Minnesota leads all-time series at 3-0
Last Meeting: Dec. 26, 1980 (MN W, 95-54)
Last Ivy League Team Played: 2021 vs. Princeton (Nov. 14, 2021 at Asheville Tournament, 2OT, 87-80)
STARTING FIVE
• The Gophers welcome the Yale Bulldogs to Williams Arena Saturday at 3 p.m. It marks the first contest between the two teams since 1980 and fourth all time in school history. Prior to the 1980 meeting, the Gophers and Bulldogs met in 1902 and 1957, all of which were home wins for the Gophers. Minnesota's last Ivy League team it faced was Princeton back in 2021 as the Gophers won a double-overtime game against the Tigers to win the Asheville Tournament.
• Minnesota looks to return to the win column Saturday after suffering a 54-51 loss to North Texas Wednesday night. The Gophers are now 2-1 on the season after two wins the opening week of play. Dawson Garcia added 24 points Wednesday, went 10-for-10 at the free throw line and snagged a game-best eight rebounds.
• Dawson Garcia became the 47th Golden Gopher to achieve 1,000 points at Minnesota and the first Gopher to score 1,000 points since Daniel Oturu established the mark in 2020. Garcia had 398 points in the 2022-23 season, 545 points in 2023-24 and now 78 already his senior season. Over the course of his college career, Garcia has 1516 collegiate points.
• Garcia went 10-of-10 from the free throw line on Wednesday night. That perfection tied Marcus Carr's feat in 2020 vs. Northwestern. Ray Williams holds the school record for free throw percentage in a game when he went 12-of-12 in 1976 against Indiana. In his career, Garcia is a 78 percent shooter at the charity stripe.
• Minnesota saw the return of Frank Mitchell in the North Texas game, after missing the opening week due to a shoulder injury. It marked his official Minnesota debut as he appeared in the Bemidji State and Hamline exhibitions. The Gophers, however, were without Mike Mitchell Jr. when he suffered an ankle injury in the Omaha game. Minnesota was also without Caleb Williams (illness) and Tyler Cochran (injury).
CLOSING IN ON CAREER MILESTONES
• Femi Odukale holds 995 points, just five shy of his 1,000 collegiate point. Odukale had 146 points in 2020-21, a career-best 334 points in 2021-22, 232 in 2022-23 and 277 last season.
WHERE THEY RANK
• Early in this 2024-25 campaign, Minnesota's scoring defense ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 28th nationally. Minnesota has allowed 58.3 points in its three games into the season, which trails only Maryland, UCLA and Indiana.
• Dawson Garcia ranks second among Big Ten individuals in scoring, averaging 26 points. He also ranks ninth in rebounding. His 26.0 ppg ranks 10th nationally, while his 78 total points ranks 18th. Garcia ranks fourth nationally in player efficiency rating at 43.0 behind Ryan Kalkbrenner (Creighton), JT Toppin (Texas Tech) and Devin McGlockton (Vanderbilt).
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• Yale enters the Minnesota game with a 2-2 record. After an opening win over Quinnipiac, 88-62, the Bulldogs dropped a 91-79 loss to UIC and a 92-84 loss to Purdue on Monday. Yale's second win of the season came on Thursday vs. Emerson, 100-46.
• Slated to finish second in the Ivy this season, the Bulldogs are coming off an 2024 NCAA Tournament appearance as well as an Ivy League Tournament title a year ago. In his 26th season and fourth-longest DI tenured coach, James Jones has led the Bulldogs to Ivy regular season championships in five of the last nine seasons and Ivy League Tournament titles in 2019, 2022 and 2024.
• The Bulldogs return 2024 second team All-Ivy honorees in Bez Mbeng and John Poulakidas. Mbeng is a two-time league defensive player of the year award winner. Poulakidas leads the team in scoring averaging 20.3 points, while Bez Mbeng averages 15 and Nick Townsend rounds out the top three at 11.5. As a team, the Bulldogs average 87.8 points and are shooting 50.8 percent from the field. They rank 16th nationally in assists per game (21.3). The Bulldogs also average 40 rebounds per game.
