First Meeting Between Two Teams
Minnesota Record vs. American Athletic Conference: 15-12
Last American Team Played: 2023 (W over UTSA, 102-76)
STARTING FIVE
• Minnesota is back in action on Wednesday, November 13, when it hosts North Texas at 7 p.m. It marks the first meeting between the Gophers and the Mean Green. It's also Minnesota's first game against an American Athletic Conference team this year, as the Gophers are 15-12 all-time against current AAC teams. North Texas is the first of two teams the Gophers will face from AAC, as Wichita State is the second on November 28 in Orlando. UNT is coming off back-to-back NIT appearances in the 2023-24 and 2022-23 seasons. Like Minnesota, the Mean Green advanced to the 2024 NIT Second Round when it defeated LSU and lost to Seton Hall. In 2022-23, UNT won the NIT championship in Las Vegas.
• Minnesota concluded its first week of action with two wins against Oral Roberts (W, 80-57) and Omaha (W, 68-64). Overall, the Big Ten went 18-0 in the first game of the year and 13-4 in the second game for a 31-4 opening week schedule.
• Dawson Garcia led the charge with 54 points last week when he produced 30 in the season opener and another 24 in the Omaha win. Those opening week numbers rank him second in the conference and 12th nationally. Parker Fox, Trey Edmonds, and Lu'Cye Patterson averaged nine points in the two games, as all three had at least one double-digit game. Garcia also averaged a team-best 7.5 rebounds. Femi Odukale saw his first action as a Gopher off the bench and produced six steals and nine assists.
• Minnesota had five individuals officially make their Golden Gopher debut last week: Isaac Asuma (his collegiate debut), Trey Edmonds, Femi Odukale, Brennan Rigsby, and Lu'Cye Patterson.
• Head coach Ben Johnson has announced that Grayson Grove intends to redshirt his true freshman season. Caleb Williams will also miss the beginning of the season due to illness, while Frank Mitchell was out due to a shoulder injury.
CLOSING IN ON CAREER MILESTONES
• Minnesota has a number of individuals closing in on career and Minnesota milestones. Mike Mitchell Jr. hit his 1,000 career point in Wednesday's opener, while Femi Odukale holds 993 points.
• Dawson Garcia is three points away from 1,000 points as a Golden Gopher. Sitting at 997 points, Garcia would be the first Gopher to score 1,000 points in a Minnesota jersey since Daniel Oturu in 2020. He had 398 points his first season with the Gophers (2022-23) and 545 last season in 2023-24. Over the course of his college career, Garcia holds 1,492 points.
SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
• Coming off back-to-back NIT appearances, North Texas went 2-0 to open the 2024-25 campaign. The Mean Green defeated Evansville, 80-63, and played Wayland Baptist on Nov. 7 for an 80-38 win.
• UNT's roster this season features 10 newcomers. The Mean Green are replacing their top six scorers from last season and four starters. Moulaye Sissoko is the team's top returning scorer (103 points) and is its only returning starter (34 starts). UNT returns just 10 percent of its scoring from last season. Three players currently average double-digit points. Atin Wright averages 16 points, followed by Jasper Floyd with 14 and Johnathan Massie with 12.5 and holds a team-best 8 rebounds per game.
