First weekly award for the 'U' goaltender

ROSEMONT, Ill. - University of Minnesota men's hockey goaltender Nathan Airey was selected as the Big Ten Conference Second Star of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. He collected the first weekly award of his young career following a perfect home outing last weekend that helped vault the Golden Gophers to the No. 1 spot in both national polls.

Airey registered the first shutout of his college career in his lone outing as he had a career-high 32 saves against No. 6 Michigan on Friday night, including 14 saves in the third period to preserve the clean sheet. The sophomore remains unbeaten at 9-0-1 this season after holding the nation's eighth-ranked scoring offense off the scoreboard. He also backstopped the penalty kill unit that denied all three Wolverine power-play chances.

A native of Cochrane, Alberta, he made more than 30 saves for the first time as a Golden Gopher and held an opposing team to two or fewer goals for the sixth time in 10 starts. Airey owns a 1.99 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage and is the only NCAA goaltender with more than seven appearances to have not lost a single game this season.

The Maroon and Gold have had a star of the week a conference-leading seven times this season with Airey added to the list for the first time as a Gopher. He joins Brody Lamb (Dec. 3 and Oct. 29), Jimmy Snuggerud (Nov. 12), Sam Rinzel (Oct. 29), Jimmy Clark (Oct. 22) and Connor Kurth (Oct. 15) as weekly honorees.
