Garcia and Mitchell Jr. Score 18 In FDU Win

12/21/2024 4:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Mike Mitchell Jr. had 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists, as Minnesota (7-5) held FDU to a season-low scoring total in a 74-60 win at Williams Arena.

Garcia scored 14 points in the decisive second half, in which the Gophers shot 72 percent (18-of-25) and were 15-of-17 (.882) at the free throw line. His double-double was his third this season and the 14th of his career (10th at Minnesota). Mitchell Jr. reached double figures for the third-straight game since he returned from an ankle injury. Femi Odukale and Lu'Cye Patterson each added 10 points for the Gophers, while Parker Fox finished with six points, four blocked shots, and two steals. Minnesota made 27-of-55 (.491) field goals, including 5-of-20 three-pointers, and 15-of-18 (.833) free throws.

FDU (4-10) tied its season-low with 60 points scored, and the Knights were limited to just 23-of-67 (.343) field goals, including 8-of-26 (.308) from beyond the three-point arc. Ahmed Barba-Bay led FDU with 15 points, while Jo'el Emanuel had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Terrence Brown from Columbia Heights, who entered the game among the nation's Top 10 scorers (22.1 ppg), was limited to 10 points on 4-of-22 shooting and added six assists.

Patterson opened the scoring with a three-pointer, and the Knights responded with a 7-0 run, before a Garcia putback made it a 7-5 game with 15:19 remaining. Trey Edmonds' (four points, season-high eight rebounds) baseline jumper tied the score, but a pair of FDU layups put the Knights up, 11-7. Minnesota used a 7-0 run, with five points coming from Mitchell Jr., to take a three-point lead with 10:24 left in the half, but the Knights reclaimed a 15-14 edge during a four-minute, 35-second scoring drought for the Gophers. Garcia ended the drought with a jumper at the 5:49 mark, and the teams traded baskets the remainder of the half, with FDU taking a 21-20 lead to the locker room.

Mitchell Jr. led the Gophers with seven first-half points, Garcia added four points and five rebounds, and Odukale had four points and three boards. Minnesota shot 30 percent (9-of-30) in the first half, including just 2-of-12 (.167) from three-point range, and the Gophers held a 25-20 advantage in rebounding. Bismark Nsiah led FDU with five points, but Brown was held to four points on 2-of-13 shooting. As a team, the Knights made just 10-of-34 (.294) field goals, including 1-of-11 (.091) from behind the arc.

Odukale scored the first six points of the second half for Minnesota, as the Gophers tied the score at 26-26, and Odukale's third jumper initiated a 21-4 Gophers run over the next 7:35 to open a 45-30 lead with 10:00 left in the game. Eight different players scored during the stretch for the Gophers, led by Patterson's five points. FDU countered with an 11-4 stretch to cut the Gophers' lead to 49-41, but Garcia scored on a layup and added a pair of free throws to increase the lead back to 53-43 with 6:06 left. Garcia scored on another layup and connected on two more free throws, giving him 16 points, and the Gophers led, 57-46. A layup by Isaac Asuma (five points, five rebounds, four assists) and free throws from Mitchell Jr. increased the lead to 61-48 with 2:45 left, and the Gophers closed out the 14-point victory to improve to 7-2 at Williams Arena this season.

Minnesota wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule by playing host to Morgan State on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 1:00 p.m. on Peacock.
