Gophers Drop Big Ten Opener to Spartans

12/4/2024 10:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Mike Mitchell Jr. made his return to the lineup with five three-pointers during a 17-point night, but Minnesota (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten) was unable to match Michigan State's hot shooting in a 90-72 loss to open Big Ten play at Williams Arena.

Garcia's double-double was his second this season and the 13th of his career (nine at Minnesota). Mitchell Jr., playing for the first time since injuring his ankle on Nov. 9, came off the bench to make 6-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-9 from three-point range in 22 minutes. He's the first Gopher with five or more treys in a game since Cam Christie made six at Illinois on Feb. 28, 2024. Lu'Cye Patterson also reached double figures with 12 points and led Minnesota with four assists. Frank Mitchell had six points and three rebounds, Parker Fox had six points, and Isaac Asuma added five points, three assists, and two boards.

The Spartans (7-2, 1-0 B1G) had four players reach double figures, led by Coen Carr's 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Jaxon Kohler had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Xavier Booker made 3-of-4 three-pointers to finish with 11 points. As a team, MSU made 29-of-55 (.527) field goals, including 11-of-22 three-pointers, and 21-of-26 (.808) free throws. The Spartans were 7-of-10 from long-range in the second half, and they had a 39-27 rebounding edge.

Michigan State opened the game by pulling ahead 6-0, but a Mitchell jumper and Patterson's corner three cut the deficit to 9-5. Following the first media timeout, Patterson hit a baseline jumper, Asuma scored on a layup, and Garcia hit a corner three to put the Gophers up 12-9 with 13:34 left in the half. After the Spartans tied the score on a three, Fox's layup had Minnesota in front 14-12, but MSU countered with a 14-0 run over the next 3:41 to force a Gophers timeout. MSU extended its lead to 29-14, before Asuma hit a three-pointer from in front of the MSU bench to snap a five-plus minute scoreless streak. With the Spartans leading 33-17, Mitchell scored twice in the lane and Mitchell Jr. connected on a trey to cut the deficit to 35-24 with 3:10 remaining. Garcia went 6-of-6 at the line in the final three minutes, and MSU had a 42-30 lead at the half.

Garcia led the Gophers with nine first-half points, while Mitchell had six points, and Asuma and Patterson each had five. Minnesota made 10-of-26 (.385) field goals, including 4-of-15 (.267) three-pointers, and 6-of-7 (.857) free throws. Jaden Akins paced the Spartans with nine points, Coen Carr had eight, and nine of 10 MSU players to appear in the first half scored points. The Spartans were 14-of-28 from the field, including 4-of-12 (.333) from long-range, and 10-of-12 (.833) at the stripe, while holding a 24-8 rebounding advantage. MSU outscored Minnesota 20-10 in the paint and had a 15-0 advantage in fastbreak points.

Garcia opened the scoring in the second half with a three-point play, and he added a jumper with 17:44 left to keep Minnesota within 46-35, but a 5-0 MSU run stretched the Spartans' lead to 16. Femi Odukale scored on a layup and a jumper to cut the visitors' lead to 52-39. Fox scored on a layup and Mitchell Jr. hit a three-pointer to make it 55-44 with 10:59 left, but MSU answered with a three-point play. Mitchell Jr. knocked down two more three-pointers, giving him four on the night, but Minnesota wasn't able to put a run together and the Spartans went on a 10-2 run to build a 74-54 lead with 6:28 left. Minnesota put together a 9-4 run, with five points from Patterson, to cut MSU's lead to 78-63, but MSU's torrid second-half shooting secured the victory.

Minnesota continues Big Ten play on Monday, Dec. 9, when it travels to Indiana for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Big Ten Network.
