Gophers Fall at Indiana
12/9/2024 8:45:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Dawson Garcia made 9-of-15 field goals and scored a game-high 22 points for Minnesota (6-5, 0-2 Big Ten), but Indiana (8-2, 1-0 B1G) shot 56.6 percent and had five players reach double figures, as the Hoosiers opened Big Ten play with an 82-67 win at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Â
Garcia scored 20-plus points for the seventh time this season and added four rebounds, two blocked shots, a steal, and an assist for the Gophers. Mike Mitchell Jr. scored 10 points in his first start since Nov. 9, and Lu'Cye Patterson had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Femi Odukale finished with six points, four rebounds, and team-highs of four assists and four blocks, while Brennan Rigsby and Parker Fox each scored six points.
Â
As a team, Minnesota made 26-of-55 (473) field goals and was 13-of-15 (867) at the free throw line, but the Gophers were outrebounded, 35-22. Oumar Ballo led the Hoosiers with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Malik Reneau finished with 16 points and seven boards, and Bryson Tucker had 16 points and six rebounds.
Â
Indiana opened the game by grabbing a 6-2 lead, but the Gophers responded with a 10-1 run, keyed by four points apiece from Patterson and Garcia for a 12-7 lead with 16:11 left. The Hoosiers reclaimed a lead with a 7-0 run, but Garcia's jumper and a layup by Patterson made it 16-14 in favor of the Gophers. At that point, Minnesota had made six straight field goals and was off to an 8-of-11 start. Rigsby hit a couple jumpers in the paint around a layup from Mitchell Jr., and the Gophers led 22-20 with 11:42 remaining in the half. But Indiana took advantage of a seven-minute, 46-second field goal drought for the Gophers with a 16-1 run, before Mitchell Jr. hit a three with 3:56 left to cut the deficit to 36-26. A dunk by Fox and Mitchell Jr.'s second three pulled Minnesota within nine, but IU took a 44-31 lead to the locker room.
Â
Garcia and Mitchell Jr. each scored eight first-half points to pace the Gophers, and Patterson added six. After making 11-of-15 (.733) field goals to start the game, Minnesota cooled off and ended the half at 14-of-27 (.519), including 2-of-5 from behind the arc. Ballo and Tucker each had 11 points, while Reneau had 10 and Mackenzie Mgbako had nine for the Hoosiers, who shot a red-hot 17-of-27 (.630) from the field.
Â
Garcia began the second half with eight of Minnesota's first 10 points to keep the Gophers within 55-41 at the 13:00 mark. The Hoosiers used a 9-2 run to build a 21-point lead at 68-47, before a Garcia layup and a pair of free throws by Patterson cut it to 68-51 with 8:47 left. Mitchell Jr. added a pair of free throws and Rigsby scored on a layup to make it an 8-0 Gophers run to cut the deficit to 68-55. Indiana stretched the lead back to 18 with a 7-2 run until Garcia's layup with 4:10 left made it 75-59. A pair of layups by Frank Mitchell, two free throws from Patterson, and a layup by Kadyn Betts pulled the Gophers within 79-67 with less than a minute remaining, but that was the closest Minnesota got in the second half.
Â
Minnesota has time off for final exams before it returns to the court to play host to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1:00 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
