Gophers Back in Action Saturday Hosting FDU

• The University of Minnesota men's basketball program returns to action on Dec. 21 after an 11-day hiatus due to academic finals. The Gophers host FDU (Fairleigh Dickinson) for a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday. It marks just the second time these two teams have met and the first since Dec. 13, 2002. The last time the Gophers played FDU, head coach Ben Johnson was on the team and scored 16 points, including four three-pointers. Michael Bauer six three-pointers in that game and went 8-of-8.Â
• Minnesota is playing its first and only Northeast Conference Team this year facing the FDU Knights. The Gophers close out the nonconference portion of the schedule later this month against MEAC member, Morgan State. The last current NEC team the Gophers faced was Mount St. Mary's in 2018 where Minnesota won, 71-53. The Gophers are 6-2 in nonconference play.
• Minnesota is looking to return to the win column after an 82-67 loss at Indiana, Dec. 9. The Golden Gophers had three in double-digit scoring, including Dawson Garcia that had a game-high 22 points. He averages 19.3 points this season, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. Mike Mitchell Jr. and Lu'Cye Patterson also produced 10 points in the loss.Â
• Mike Mitchell Jr. missed seven games early this season due to an ankle injury and returned to the lineup at the start of Big Ten play against Michigan State. Minnesota's best three-point shooter a year ago, Mitchell Jr. has made seven treys in his two-game return. Against MSU, Mitchell Jr. had five, the first Gopher to have that number since Cam Christie made six at Illinois on February 28, 2024. He hit another two in the loss at Indiana for his 10th in 21 attempts and shooting .47.6 percent.Â
• Minnesota has four individuals who have over 20 assists this season. Lu'Cye Patterson leads the team with 41, followed by Femi Odukale with 38, Isaac Asuma with 26 and Dawson Garcia with 20. in all, the Gophers have 168 assists on 263 field goals made.Â
GARCIA IN THE RECORDBOOKSÂ Â Â
• Dawson Garcia has scored 1,155 points as a Golden Gopher and 1,650 as a collegiate athlete. That number ranks 31st in school history (excluding vacated games). His 22 points at Indiana surpassed Rodney Williams, who had 1,145 points and played from 2010-13.Â
SCOUTING FDUÂ Â Â
• Fairleigh Dickinson enters the Minnesota game with a 4-9 record and last played on Dec. 18 in a five-point loss to La Salle, 77-72. The Knights are looking to break a two-game skid with a loss at Villanova (L, 86-72) and won a home game vs. Lehman (98-54).Â
• FDU is led by Minneapolis native Terrence Brown. He leads the team in points (287), points per game (22.1), rebounds per game (6.1), assists (39), steals (27) and turnovers (37). Dylan Joen averages 12 points, while Jo'el Emanuel also has 11 average points. Bismark Nsiah has a team-best 10 blocks.Â
• As a team, the Knights are averaging 80.2, while giving up 80.6. They are shooting 46.5 from the field, including 38 percent beyond the arc. FDU also averaged 33.5 rebounds.Â
