STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota continues Big Ten play Monday when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Indiana Hoosiers. Minnesota is 67-103 all-time against the Hoosiers, dating back to 1912. Monday's meeting marks the earliest these two teams have met each other in school history, as it's the first December game between the Gophers and Hoosiers since the Big Ten began the two-game early matchups in 2017. Minnesota is looking for its first win against the Hoosiers since 2019.Â
• Ben Johnson and Indiana's Mike Woodson are two of three coaches at the helm of their alma maters. Purdue's Matt Painter is the third. Michigan's Dusty May is also a Big Ten alum, starting his career as a student manager and video coordinator at his alma mater, Indiana.Â
• The Hoosiers won both games last year against the Gophers, the first at Assembly Hall in January 2024 (74-62), followed by a 70-58 win on March 6, 2024, at Williams Arena. This meeting between the Gophers and the Hoosiers marks the only contest between the two teams this season. Minnesota also faced Indiana just once in the 2022-23 season.Â
• Minnesota is looking for its first Big Ten win of the season after dropping its opener against Michigan State on December 4. MSU shot 52.7 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three to win, 90-72. Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and Mike Mitchell Jr. made five three-pointers during a 17-point night. Garcia's double-double was his second this season and the 13th of his career (nine at Minnesota).
• Mike Mitchell Jr. returned to action for the first time since injuring his ankle on November 9 when he came off the bench to make 6-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-9 from three-point range in 22 minutes Wednesday. He was the first Gopher with five or more treys in a game since Cam Christie made six at Illinois on February 28, 2024.
SCOUTING INDIANAÂ Â Â
• Indiana is playing in its first Big Ten game Monday after going 7-2 in nonconference play this season. The Hoosiers played Miami (OH) in a nonconference game Friday night and won 76-57. The Hoosiers dropped two contests with a pair of losses vs. Louisville and Gonzaga in the Battle for Atlantis.Â
• Indiana has balanced scoring, with four averaging double-digit points. Returners Malik Reneau and Mackenzie Mbako average 15.4 and 15.3 points, while Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo averages 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds. Myles Rice also averages 11.8 points.
• As a team, Indiana averages 80.2 points and allows 69.3. Shooting 50.3 percent from the field, the Hoosiers are shooting 36.5 from three in 156 attempts. The Hoosiers also average 38.4 rebounds and shoot 77.3 from the charity stripe.Â
ON THE DOCKETÂ Â Â
• Minnesota will be on an 11-day hiatus from competition due to academic finals. The Gophers return to action on December 21, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. The game is televised on the Big Ten Network.
• Mike Grimm and Al Nolen will provide the broadcast on Gopher Radio Network, KFAN 100.3 FM.
