MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Max McEnelly swept the weekly Big Ten awards Thursday, taking home Wrestler of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced.

A redshirt freshman, McEnelly helped the seventh-ranked Gophers take down No. 17 South Dakota State last Sunday, 30-3. Minnesota won the first six matches and ended up holding the Jackrabbits to their lowest point total in the series since 1974 (31-2).

Ranked ninth in the InterMat polls, the Waconia, Minn., native was part of the match of the day as he battled fourth-ranked Bennett Berge at 184 pounds. McEnelly found himself trailing 3-0 after the first period after being taken down for the first time all season. Berge's lead was then 5-3 going to the final period, but McEnelly got a takedown only to see Berge escape and send the match to overtime at 6-6.

After no points were scored in the first overtime session, McEnelly rode out Berge in the second period and then got a late takedown in the next frame to secure the 9-6 win and keep his undefeated record intact at 7-0 this season and 22-0 in his career.

This is the second time this year that McEnelly has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, and it's the first time he's been named Wrestler of the Week. With the addition of Freshman of the Week honors prior to this season, McEnelly is the first in the conference to be a two-time Freshman of the Week and he's the first to sweep the awards .
