No. 16 Gophers Fall to No. 11 Michigan in First Defeat of 2024

Minnesota moves to 7-1 (3-1 B1G) on the season

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 16 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team (7-1, 3-1 B1G) fell to the No. 11 Michigan Wolverines (4-4, 3-1 B1G) on Saturday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion for its first loss of the season. Michigan finished with a score of 197.375 to 197.125 for the 'U'.

"There were a lot of bright spots for us and some opportunities where we know we can get better," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We were within striking distance the whole meet. But with the way we finished the meet, it's just really exciting to think about where we can go from here."

Minnesota's floor score was a season-best 49.650, which tied for the fifth-best mark in program history. The Gophers tallied a 49.200 on the uneven bars, 49.175 on vault and 49.150 on beam.

"I told the team beforehand that we own this [floor] event," Hansen said. "They showed it tonight - how absolutely wonderful we are on the floor."

The all-around crown went to Michigan's Sierra Brooks with a 39.675. Mya Hooten took home a tie for an event title in the uneven bars, her first of the season in the event, with a 9.950. She also swept floor honors with a perfect 10.000, the eighth of her career.

The attendance for the night was an announced crowd of 4,803, the highest of the season and one of the top-five highest in program history.

EVENT BREAKDOWN:

VAULT
The 'U' earned a 49.175 on vault to start the afternoon. Sarah Moraw and Gianna Gerdes paced the group with scores of 9.900 while Mya Hooten tallied a 9.875. Sophia Nguyen (9.775) and Lauren Pearl (9.725) rounded out the top five.

BARS
Minnesota tallied a 49.200 score on bars. Mya Hooten tallied a season-best 9.950 on the bars while Gianna Gerdes posted a stellar 9.900. Jordyn Lyden put together another good performance with a 9.875 while Ella Sirjord earned a 9.775. Sophia Nguyen rounded out the top five with a score of 9.700.

BEAM
Lauren Pearl had a standout performance to pace the beam team with a 9.875 while Katie Horak anchored with a 9.850. Ella Sirjord followed her up with a score of 9.825. Gianna Gerdes and Sarah Moraw rounded out the top five with scores of 9.800. As a team, Minnesota totaled a 49.150.

FLOOR
Per usual, Minnesota finished strong on the floor at home. Mya Hooten led the group with a spectacular 10.000 on the floor, the eighth of her career and second of the season. Gianna Gerdes and Emily Koch were up next at 9.925. Seria Johnson and Lauren Pearl both tallied excellent 9.900s to round out the top five. As a team, Minnesota earned a 49.650, which is a season-best on floor and tied for the fifth best total in program history.
