MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's and women's swimming teams completed the First Chance Meet Saturday after three sessions of competition spanning two days at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

With no team scores or diving at the meet, the weekend provided an opportunity for members of the team to improve their times ahead of the Big Ten championships. The Gophers capitalized on the opportunity, recording 25 personal bests. Senior Kaiser Neverman added an NCAA 'B' cut at the meet, swimming the 100 breast in 52.80.

Seven different Gophers collected personal records in multiple events, led by junior Tommy McCarthy with four. The Edina, Minn. native set new PRs in each of the events he swam: 100 fly (47.93), 50 free (20.44), 100 back (48.43) and 100 free (44.69).

Sophomore Luke Leonidas and junior Drew Kaelin each tallied three personal records for the weekend. Leonidas did his in the 200 IM (1:48.84), 100 back (47.74) and 200 back (1:45.82). Kaelin accomplished the feat in the 50 free (21.30), 100 breast (54.45) and 200 breast (1:59.13).

The men found success in the breaststroke over the weekend with Josh Johnston and Max Scheurer joining Kaelin with personal bests in both the 100 and 200.

Smith Connor and Jackson Brown rounded out the seven Gophers with new records in multiple events. Connor collected his in the 200 IM (1:53.35) and 100 back (49.81) while Brown bested his 200 free (1:39.22) and 500 free (4:28.74) times.

Minnesota now turns its attention to the Big Ten Championships. The women's team is set to compete Feb. 21-24 in West Lafayette, Ind. The men will travel to Columbus, Ohio from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 for their Championships.
