Warian Tied for Second After 18 Holes at Puerto Classic

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Ben Warian leads the University of Minnesota men's golf team after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R. 

Warian carded a six-under 66 Sunday to place him in a three-way tie for second place. 

The Gophers sit in a tie with Big Ten rival Wisconsin at 7-under (281) par and in ninth place overall. 

Conference rival Iowa's Noah Kent currently holds the top individual spot. Kent took home a 9-under 63 in his first round on Sunday.

North Florida holds the top team spot after the first round with a combined score of 17-under par (271). Tennessee sits in second place at 16-under par (272) with Iowa two shots back at 14-under par (274). 

Notable: 
Warian finished his first round tied for the lead in par-3 scoring at 2-under. The Stillwater, Minn., native also carded a bogey-free round, tallying six birdies during his first 18 holes. 

Junior Bennett Swavely notched two birdies in his first round. Swavely sits second on the Gophers and tied for 46th overall at 1-under par (71). 

Graduate senior Brock Winter and sophomore Cormac Sharpe currently sit in a tie for 54th at even-par after their first round. 

Graduate senior Jacob Pedersen finished his round with three birdies in the last four holes. Pedersen stands in a tie for 82nd at 3-over par for his first round.
