Gophers Top Bulldogs 4-2 in Regular Season Finale

2/24/2024 5:16:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team wrapped up its 2023-24 regular season with a 4-2 over the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.

The Minnesota offense tallied four goals in the game, with each of the goals being scored by a different Gopher.

Fifth-year senior Lucy Morgan started in between the pipes for the Maroon and Gold, making 23 saves in the victory.

The Gophers capitalized on one of their two powerplay opportunities in the opening frame, with sophomore Madison Kaiser tipping in a Madeline Wethington shot to give Minnesota a one-goal lead roughly halfway through the period.

Captain Peyton Hemp added another goal for Minnesota when she came flying off the bench and buried a shot into the back of the Bulldog net just under seven minutes into the second period.

Freshman Emma Kreisz started the third-period scoring when she scored her sixth goal of the season, with fellow freshman Ava Lindsay collecting her third assist of the game on the play. The Bulldogs pulled within one as they found the back of the net with just under two minutes to play. The Gophers quickly responded, as Abbey Murphy buried an empty-net goal to increase the lead.

Quotable
"Really competitive, tough, physical game today, both teams really wanted it," head coach Brad Frost said. "Lucy [Morgan] was great in net, and as a team we played really well overall. Happy for our seniors, as they mean a lot to our program. It's always special when you can win on senior night. We're proud of our group and are looking forward to getting into the playoffs."
