MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's hockey team is excited to announce its newest team member, Brenek Sell. Partnering with Team IMPACT, Brenek joined the Golden Gophers in October before making it official by signing with the team in February.
As an avid sports fan, Brenek loves the Gophers and Vikings and also plays baseball, flag football, and basketball, while enjoying fishing and video games. A 10-year-old from Cannon Falls, Minn., he has been battling cystic fibrosis since birth, but that has not deterred his outgoing personality and free spirit.
"This is a pretty good hockey team, but they are even better people," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said to Brenek. "That's the one thing we are the most proud of with the type of young men we have in this program. You are going to fit right in, welcome aboard!"
Since joining the men's hockey team in October, Brenek has been able to attend games and practices on the bench at 3M Arena at Mariucci. He also spends time with his new teammates in the locker room playing ping pong and bubble hockey.
Team IMPACT's unique multiyear program signs children facing serious illness and disability onto college athletic teams across the country. Based on a clinical model, Team IMPACT guides a symbiotic relationship between teams and children focused on socialization, empowerment, and resilience, ensuring everyone involved has the personalized game plan they need to win – effectively building confidence and independence. Founded in 2011, Team IMPACT has matched more than 2,300 children with 700+ colleges and universities in 49 states, impacting more than 60,000 student-athletes.
