Josefin Bouveng, Peyton Hemp and Emma Kreisz scored for Minnesota as well
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 5 University of Minnesota women's hockey beat St. Thomas 5-2 at Ridder Arena on Saturday. With the win, Minnesota improves to 22-5-1 overall and 16-5-1-2 in the WCHA.
Abbey Murphy scored twice, had one assist and picked up 17 penalty minutes as she helped power Minnesota to its sixth straight win. Josefin Bouveng, Peyton Hemp and Emma Kreisz also scored for the Gophers, while Skylar Vetter made 14 saves to pick up her 11th win of the season.
Bouveng scored her second goal of the weekend as she put Minnesota up 1-0 with a power-play goal in the first period. The Tommies scored exactly one minute later to tie the game 1-1 at the end of the first.Â
Minnesota scored three goals in the second period and Murphy got it started when she scored on a scintillating breakaway to give Minnesota a 2-1 advantage. Kreisz added a power-play goal to put Minnesota ahead 3-2 and then Murphy dazzled again to double-up the Tommies 4-2 at the end of 40 minutes.Â
Hemp's third period tally made the score 5-2 to shut the door on the Tommies. Minnesota outshot St. Thomas 34-16 and killed off all six power plays it faced. Â
Notable
With two goals, Murphy now has nine multi-goal games this year. That mark leads the team and no other Gopher has more than one such game this year. Minnesota is 4-0 against St. Thomas this year and Murphy scored in all four games. She has five goals against the Tommies this season.Â
Quotable
"A really solid win here," said head coach Brad Frost. "I am proud of our group. They faced a lot of adversity there with a lot of 5-on-3 and penalties in the third, but Skylar was up to the ask and our team continued to battle and compete. We played a solid 60 minutes tonight. We are happy with the sweep and excited to get back after it next week."
