Vetter Shuts Out Huskies in 1-0 Gopher Win
2/9/2024 8:46:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team prevailed over No. 10 St. Cloud State in a defensive showdown on Friday night behind stout goaltending and one Abbey Murphy goal.
After a scoreless first period, Murphy broke the tie when she found the back of the net with 5:27 left in the second period.
Junior goaltender Skylar Vetter started in net for the Maroon and Gold and saved 24 Husky shots.
A closely-contested opening frame saw no powerplay opportunities for either team, and the period ended without much offensive juice from either squad.
Murphy scored her 28th goal of the season when she snuck a shot by St. Cloud State's goaltender, giving the Gophers a one-goal lead entering the final five minutes of the second period. The Gophers capitalized on their first powerplay chance, a critical play in a game in which offense was hard to come by.
The Maroon and Gold held their 1-0 lead tight in the third period, shutting the door on the Huskies in the final period to secure the win.
