Late Game Push Sends Gophers to Sweep of Huskies

2/10/2024 4:54:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's hockey team scored four goals in the third period to secure a sweep of the No. 10 St. Cloud State Huskies on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win.

After the game was tied at one heading into the third period, the Maroon and Gold put four shots in the back of the Husky net and then coasted to a victory. Junior Ella Huber scored twice in the game, one of five Gophers to light the lamp on the day.

Fifth-year goaltender Lucy Morgan started between the pipes for Minnesota and made 21 saves in the win.

Murphy lit the lamp with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame, her 29th goal of the season. After a scoreless first period last night, the Gophers jumped ahead early and took a lead into the second period.

The Huskies tied it up in the second frame, as Avery Farrell scored an unassisted goal to even things up just under five minutes into the period. The 1-1 score held to the final horn of the frame.

The Gophers hit their stride in the third, as Huber scored just 13 seconds into the period. Minnesota then tacked on three more goals – two empty-net goals – to finish 5-1.

Quotable
"Another great win here at home against a tough opponent," head coach Brad Frost said. "Six big points on the weekend for us. Lucy [Morgan] was great, our top line produced, and we defended well. We know it's going to continue to be tough as we go, but we're looking forward to getting out to Madison next weekend."
