Gophers Finish Round One of Purdue Puerto Rico Classic

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's golf team finished round one of the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic today. The team is tied for ninth after 18 holes and was led by sophomore Isabella McCauley who penciled a three-under-par 69. Graduate Emma Carpenter followed closely behind with a two-under-par 70. The team finishes with a score of 293 (+5).
No. 11 Louisiana State leads the tournament after day one with a team score of 283 (-5).

"We got off to a really good start to our spring season today," said Head Coach Rhyll Brinsmead. To have two players shoot under par coming off a long extended winter break is really encouraging.," I know we have some cleaning up to do to add to the depth of our scores, but I'm very confident we can come back tomorrow and play even better."
Notable:
McCauley led the Gophers with a three-under-par round finishing the day with five birdies and 11 pars. The sophomore's 69 has her tied for fifth place.
Carpenter played a consistent round with 14 pars and three birdies. She finished the day with a 2-under-par 70 that places her tied for seventh place.
Senior Hailey Loh and graduate Grace Curran each finish tied for 65th after the first 18 holes. Loh started off well with five pars and two birdies on the front. Curran played a consistent front 9 holes, penciling in six pars and a birdie. Both Loh and Curran finished with a score of 77 (+5).
Megan Furtney finished the first round with nine pars and two birdies for a score of 78 (+6). She is in a tie for 78th place.
Freshman Phitchanaj Phongthammarug completed her first round with the Gophers while competing as an individual. She totaled ten pars and a birdie to finish with a score of 79 (+7) in her Minnesota debut.

The team is back in action for the Puerto Rico Classic Second Round tomorrow, Feb. 5 with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. CT.
