Tracking the Golden Gophers
Minnesota opens its Big Ten season against the Maryland Terrapins. The Gophers hold a 14-13 mark through preseason play and will begin the conference slate on the road the first two weekends out. The Maroon and Gold are led by sophomore Jess Oakland, who is batting .409 with 30 runs off 36 hits. The shortstop also has left the yard eight time this season, the most of any Gopher and third most in the Big Ten. She picked up NFCA Player of the Week honors on March 5 and was the first Gopher to win the award since 2015.

Maryland opens Big Ten play with a 13-14 record on the 2024 season. The Terrapins are led by Diamond Williams, who's batting .341 with 30 hits, 26 RBI, and 10 homers this season. On March 11, Sydney Wyche earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolades. 2024 marks the a new era for the Terrapins, as they're under the new guidance of Head Coach Lauren Karn. The most winningest coach in Oakland softball history, she led the Grizzlies to back-to-back Horizon League regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023. They won the 2022 conference tournament and received an NCAA Tournament berth.

Last season, Minnesota and Maryland faced off down in Waco, Texas in a preseason Tournament at Baylor. Minnesota took both games while the Terrapins held a No. 21/23 ranking in both major polls.
