Gophers Drop Game Three to Maryland

3/24/2024 1:02:00 PM | Softball

Oakland had multiple extra base hits, while Leschber hit her third two RBI homer of the weekend

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Minnesota Golden Gophers got a big game out of sophomore Jess Oakland, who collected two extra base hits in a 12-6 loss to the Maryland Terrapins Sunday.

Freshman Macy Richardson (1-3) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (15-15, 1-2 B1G).

Oakland's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included a double, a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Addison Leschber compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Morgan DeBord also contributed for the Golden Gophers, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Minnesota's offense produced a three-run output that included home runs from both Oakland and Leschber.

The Terrapins failed to push any runs across before the Golden Gophers built on their lead in the third inning. Minnesota pushed across a run on senior Delanie Cox's two-out RBI double, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 4-0.

Minnesota's lead had disappeared by the time the fifth inning arrived and turned into a 7-4 Maryland advantage, when the Golden Gophers cut that deficit to 7-6. The Golden Gophers notched two runs when a single from DeBord scored senior Sydney Strelow and freshman Lucy Hooper. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Maryland added five runs to their tally on the way to a 12-6 final.
