MINNEAPOLIS – Amaya Battle and Sophie Hart of the University of Minnesota women's basketball team have earned a spot on the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Women's Basketball Team, it was announced Tuesday.
To be eligible for the award, nominees must have a 3.5 GPA and completed one full calendar year at their current institution and is at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Nominees must also be a starter or important to the team and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Battle and Hart now both advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced April 16.
Battle, an All-Big Ten honorable mention, has averaged 11.8 points per game this season while handing out an average of 5.5 assists and bringing down 4.6 rebounds. The sociology major erupted for numerous career highs this season, including points (32), rebounds (12), assists (10), steals (5) and free throws made (11). She averaged 27 points, 5.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and hit 18-of-23 from the free throw line during the Big Ten Tournament. She's now just five assists from breaking into the program's all-time top 10 in assists in just 62 games played.
In her first season with the Maroon and Gold Hart has been a huge factor down on the low block for the Gophers. The business marketing education major has been one of the most efficient players in the Big Ten this season with a field goal percentage of 58.8. After playing in just 25 games prior to her time in the Twin Cities, Hart has taken advantage of her time on the court, improving her points per game output from 1.4 to 10.3 this season at Minnesota.
The 'U' is back in action on Friday in the second round of the WNIT when the Gophers host North Dakota State University (22-11, 13-3 Summit). The game is set for a 7 p.m. CT tip and will be broadcast on B1G+.
