First career weekly award for the Gopher forward
ROSEMONT, Ill. - University of Minnesota men's hockey forward Jaxon Nelson put together a six-point weekend to close the regular season as the Big Ten Conference First Star of the Week.
Nelson was unstoppable for the Golden Gophers and took over the series against No. 16 Michigan with six points via five goals and an assist and was a plus-5 on his way to the first weekly award of his five-year career. He recorded his first collegiate hat trick in Friday night's win over the Wolverines, scoring once in each of the three periods, including a power-play tally in the middle frame. With the three-goal outing, the graduate student became the eighth Gopher to record at least 20 points in 2023-24.
The Magnolia, Minn., native followed up that effort with his third, three-point performance of the season Saturday as he tallied two goals and an assist in the third period to help the Gophers overcome a three-goal deficit. Nelson set up the game-tying goal with less than two minutes to play that forced overtime to tie his career high of three points for the second-straight night. He also won a game-high 10 faceoffs Friday (10-of-17) before leading the way for both teams with 16 faceoff wins (16-of-25) in the series finale, ending the series by winning 62 percent of draws.
Nelson is the ninth different player representing the Maroon and Gold to be honored with a weekly award in 2023-24, totaling 14 B1G accolades, four more than any team within the league: Jaxon Nelson (Mar. 4), Justen Close (Feb. 13, Feb. 6, Oct. 24), Aaron Huglen (Feb. 13), Oliver Moore (Jan. 30), Rhett Pitlick (Jan. 23, Dec. 5, Nov. 7), Sam Rinzel (Jan. 16), Jimmy Snuggerud (Jan. 10, Oct. 17), Bryce Brodzinski (Nov. 28), and Brody Lamb (Nov. 14).
