Chavez and Oakland's Back-to-Back Home Runs Not Enough in Minnesota's 5-4 Loss to Indiana

4/14/2024 1:13:00 PM | Softball

The Gophers fell by one run to the Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Kayla Chavez homered and drove in two, but it was not enough to push the Minnesota Golden Gophers over the top in their 5-4 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday.

Freshman Macy Richardson (3-4) came out of the bullpen for Minnesota (21-18, 7-5 B1G) and took the loss.

In the batter's box, the Gophers were paced by Chavez, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Jess Oakland put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Gophers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Minnesota's offense produced a three-run output that included back-to-back homers from Chavez and Oakland.

After the Hoosiers rallied to tie the ballgame at three, the Gophers came back to retake the lead in the fourth inning. Junior Nani Valencia came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Gophers. The Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as Indiana scored two times over the remaining three innings to grab the 5-4 win.
