The Gophers won game two of the series

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --The Minnesota Golden Gophers took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 9-6 win against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Saturday.

Freshman Macy Richardson (5-4) got the win for Minnesota (23-20, 9-7). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs, all of them earned, on 11 hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.

At the plate, the Golden Gophers were led by senior Delanie Cox, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a triple and three RBI. Junior Taylor Krapf put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior Sydney Strelow also contributed for Minnesota, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Minnesota's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a three-run triple off the bat of Cox.

The Scarlet Knights then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 4-1 until the Golden Gophers expanded their advantage in the second. Minnesota pushed across a run on Krapf's two-out RBI double, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 5-1.

Minnesota kept Rutgers scoreless before building their lead to 7-1 the following inning. Senior Morgan DeBord's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota kept the Scarlet Knights scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Golden Gophers sent home a run on Strelow's one-out RBI double, bringing the Minnesota advantage to 8-1.

Rutgers got within 8-3 until the Golden Gophers scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 9-3. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Krapf. Rutgers put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Golden Gophers still held on for the 9-6 win.
