1V8+ boat lands its second weekly award
ROSEMONT, Ill. - For the second time this spring, the Golden Gophers rowing team's First Varsity Eight crew was honored as the Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the league office. The Maroon and Gold are the only B1G program with multiple Boat of the Week honors in 2023-24.
Minnesota's top boat put together an impressive weekend of rowing at the Big Ten Invitational Regatta in Sarasota, Fla., picking up a pair of race wins during the two-day event. The crew got the weekend started by taking down its three opponents, Iowa, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma, powering through the back half of the race for the victory Friday morning in a time of 6:32.173. It followed that by placing third in the afternoon session, falling to only No. 5 Brown and No. 13 Rutgers.
The Maroon and Gold went right back to its winning ways Saturday morning as the 1V8+ added its second race win of the event, finishing ahead of UCLA, Clemson, Michigan State, and Oklahoma, covering the 2,000-meter race in 6:29.913. The crew has now won five of its eight spring races with its three losses all coming against top-16 programs.
It's the first time in more than a decade, and just the sixth time in program history, that the Gophers have earned a B1G Boat of the Week honor twice in a single season. The last time it happened was during the 2012-13 campaign when Minnesota picked up the accolades twice in a three-week stretch between March 12-26.
1V8 Members - Isabella Bejaran (cox), Cecilie Christensen, Ella Saunders, Josefine Freltoft, Manon Field, Madeline Lange, Alexa Mueller, Tallulah Sweet, Nena Papaterpou
