Gopher Tennis’ Season Comes to an End Against Purdue

4/25/2024 3:02:00 PM | Tennis

ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The 9th-seeded University of Minnesota tennis program fell 4-2 to No. 8 Purdue in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. This marks the end of the Golden Gophers' 2023-24 tennis season, finishing the year with 11 wins.

The 2024 regular season saw the Maroon and Gold bounce back from the program's 5-17 overall and 0-11 conference records in 2023. Last season, injuries forced the team to forfeit their final five matches and a spot in the Big Ten Tournament. In 2024, under first-year head coach Lois Arterberry, the Gophers improved to an 11-13 overall record, a 4-8 conference record, and the 9th seed in the Big Ten Tournament.

The program also claimed two wins over ITA nationally-ranked teams this season, defeating then-No. 48 Purdue on Mar. 10 and then-No. 62 Iowa on Mar. 31. During the week of Mar. 12, Minnesota held a national ranking of No. 72 and saw sophomore Aiva Schmitz recognized as the program's first Big Ten Player of the Week since 2020.

Quote from Coach Arterberry
"I'm really proud of the way this program has competed throughout the season, especially in bouncing back after having to end last season early." said head coach Lois Arterberry. "I'm grateful for the way the student-athletes fought on a big stage today. They really gave it their all against a super competitive Purdue team, and we couldn't ask for anything more. While today's match didn't end the way we wanted, I am really excited to build on the overall progress we made this season. We want to lay a foundation that can foster a championship team one day, and we will continue to work for that. Our work is definitely cut out for us, but we are happy and excited to do everything we can to put this program on the map again."

Key Match Moments
The doubles point went to Purdue to start the day. The Gophers' No. 1 pair Mia Liepert and Sofia Pinto got Minnesota off to a fast start, defeating Tara Katarina Milic and Carmen Gallardo 6-1. Purdue struck back with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 doubles spot. The round came down to a tight match at No. 2, but Anali Kocevar and Emma Belluomini ultimately fell to Csilla Fodor and Kennedy Gibbs 7-5, clinching the point for the Boilermakers.

The singles round saw the Gophers continue to battle but fall short of a full comeback. No. 3 Aiva Schmitz was defeated by Kennedy Gibbs and No. 1 Mia Liepert fell to Carmen Gallardo to extend the Purdue lead. Minnesota then got on the board after No. 4 Emma Belluomini took down Juana Larranga 6-3, 6-2. No. 6 Sofia Pinto got the Gophers another point, winning 7-5, 6-3 against Ashlie Wilson. However, the Boilermaker's No. 5 Tara Katarina Milic would end the match in favor of Purdue, as she defeated Gopher captain Zeyneb Sarioglan 6-4, 6-2. Minnesota's No. 2 Anali Kocevar held a 6-3, 5-4 lead before her match was abandoned.
