Minnesota Falls to Penn State Despite Late Lead

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 7-3 to the Penn State Nittany Lions Friday.
Junior Seth Clausen (1-2) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (18-18, 4-9). Junior Will Semb started the ballgame and went 5.2 innings, surrendering two runs, both earned, on five hits, walking four and striking out five.
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were paced by junior Jake Perry, who went 3-for-4 on the day with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning when Counsell came across on a sacrifice fly by Weber Neels.
The Nittany Lions failed to push any runs across before the 'U' built on their lead in the third inning. Junior Ike Mezzenga's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Minnesota scored twice, which brought the lead to 3-0. The Gophers were unable to hold the lead, as Penn State scored seven times over the remaining six innings to grab the 7-3 win.
