ROSEMONT, Ill. – Minnesota Golden Gophers left-handed pitcher Will Whelan has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

The Lino Lakes, Minn. native pitched 5.1 innings of relief for the Gophers over three appearances. He allowed just one run on one hit and three walks while striking out four. Whelan held opponents to hitting .063 against him and picked up his first career save on Sunday to clinch the series win over Penn State.

For the season, the southpaw is 1-0 with one save in 15.2 innings across 14 appearances. He has only allowed four extra base hits and is holding opponents to a .200 average.

This is Whelan's first Big Ten Freshman of the Week award and the second weekly award for the Gophers this season. Fellow rookie Kyle Remington earned the same distinction on March 11.
