Minnesota Completes Sweep Over Iowa with 5-1 Win

The Golden Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Minnesota Golden Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Monday.

Senior Jacie Hambrick (6-8) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minnesota (26-22, 12-8 B1G). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Gophers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Junior Taylor Krapf put Minnesota on the board with a one-out solo home run off sophomore Jalen Adams.

After the Hawkeyes rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Golden Gophers came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning. Minnesota picked up a run on sophomore Jess Oakland's two-out solo home run off of Adams, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 2-1.

Minnesota held Iowa without a run before building their lead to 5-1 the following inning. The score remained 5-1 for the rest of the game, as Minnesota coasted to the win.

GAME NOTES

» The Golden Gophers power output was led by Oakland, who picked up two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the sixth, when it pushed three runs across.
» Minnesota grabbed a 1-1 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Golden Gophers out-hit the Hawkeyes at a 7-3 clip.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 24 Iowa hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and 10 fly balls.
» The Golden Gophers drew four walks from Iowa pitching.
