All Minnesota Starters Reach Base in 7-6 Loss to Nebraska

5/3/2024 8:28:00 PM | Softball

The Gophers dropped game one of the series

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Minnesota got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Golden Gophers fell to the Nebraska Cornhuskers 7-6 Friday.

Senior Jacie Hambrick (6-9) got the ball to start for Minnesota (26-23, 12-9 B1G) and took the loss. Freshman Cameron Grayson was a bright spot for the Gophers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three shutout innings, allowing two hits.

Offensively, the Gophers were paced by junior Kayla Chavez, who went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI. Junior Nani Valencia furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior Sydney Strelow also helped out for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Gophers first put runs on the board in the first inning. Minnesota got an RBI single from Chavez, scoring junior Taylor Krapf from second base.

The Gophers kept the deficit at 2-1 before taking the lead in the second. Minnesota scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Strelow, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota's lead had evaporated once the seventh inning came around and turned into a 7-4 Nebraska advantage, when the Gophers cut that deficit to 7-6. The Gophers drove two runs across on a two-run double from Valencia that brought home Chavez and senior Delanie Cox. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
