'U' Wins Women's B1G Team Title, Men Finish Seventh Sunday

Women's first team title since 2018, fourth overall
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It was a banner day for the University of Minnesota Sunday as the women's team won the 2024 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship after recording 80 team points during the day and totaled 131. On the men's side, the Golden Gophers added two event titles and finished the meet in seventh place overall.
It's the fourth time in program history the Maroon and Gold have claimed the women's team title, including three of the previous eight meets, and first since 2018. The 4x400m relay team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Brooke Jaworski, and Abigail Schaaffe clinched the championship with a come-from-behind event win by .01 seconds.
Devin Augustine put on a show for the Minnesota men, picking up three medals, tallying an event title in the 100m before placing third in the 200m as well as third as a part of the 4x100m relay. Jak Urlacher closed the day by winning the pole vault, the fourth event win of the weekend for the men.
The Gophers had student-athletes competing in a combined 22 of the 24 total event finals conducted Sunday.
Minnesota Women's Track and Field
The 4x100m relay team got the day started with six team points as Odell Frye, Victory Godah, Zariyah Black, Alliyah McNeil sprinted their way to a third-place finish in 44.39 seconds. That set the tone for Minnesota that it carried through the rest of the afternoon.
It was Erin Reidy's turn next in the 1500m and the junior held the lead with 60 meters to go before earning a silver medal in a time of 4:15.42, a new personal best, and the second-fastest time in school history.
In the women's triple jump, Minnesota had Diarra Sow and Brooke Moore place sixth and seventh, respectively. Sow leaped 12.97m (42-6.75), while Moore went 12.88m (42-3.25) and the freshman gave the team five points towards its total.
The Maroon and Gold had a pair of student-athletes post top-five results in the 100m hurdles led by Maja Maunsbach and her third-place finish at 13.33 seconds. Right behind her in fifth was Black, who extended her impressive afternoon, running the event in 13.40 seconds.
The 400m had a similar effort from the Gophers when Janielle Josephs and Jayla Campbell went fourth and fifth, respectively, tacking on nine team points. Josephs ran the lap in 53.27 seconds and right on her heels was Campbell just .01 seconds behind in 53.28 seconds.
Minnesota continued to showcase its sprinting speed with Frye and Godah placing second and third, respectively, in the 100m to give the team a critical 14 points. Frye ran 11.20 seconds, the second fastest in team history, and Godah was close behind in 11.27 seconds, the No. 4 time for the program.
As the lone representative of the Maroon and Gold in the 800m, senior Brooke Jaworski covered the half mile in 2:05.58 for a fourth-place finish. Abigail Schaaffe and Dyandra Gray placed seventh and ninth, respectively, during the finals of the 400m hurdles in 58.82 seconds and 59.53 seconds.
It was late in the day and the 200m became a pivotal race for the Gophers and thanks to Godah (23.154 seconds) and Frye (23.158 seconds) placing third and fourth, respectively, moved atop the team standings with 11 more points. The two each set a personal best and were separated by a fraction of a second and also ran the No. 2 and No. 3 fastest times in program history.
The Gophers put a stamp on an incredible weekend of competition in the 4x400m relay when Campbell, Josephs, Jaworski, and Schaaffe stormed to the end and surpassed Ohio State at the finish line to win the race, securing the team title in the process. In the anchor leg, Schaaffe erased the Buckeyes lead and crossed the line at 3:33.34, .01 seconds ahead for a gold medal.
Minnesota Men's Track and Field
The Gophers' men opened their day on the track behind a third-place performance in the 4x100m relay as Charles Godfred, Devin Augustine, Finn Schirmer, and Gary Afram crossed the finish line in 39.50 seconds, the No. 3 time in school history.
Eli Hoeft tacked on five team points for the Maroon and Gold as the senior ran the 1500m in 3:45.12 to land in fourth place. Christian Martin battled to the finish during the 110m hurdles and picked up one team point behind an eight-place result in a time of 14.04 seconds. The Gophers got one more team point in the 400m after Ramy Ayoub raced to eighth in 47.53 seconds.
Augustine made things look easy in the finals of the 100m, cruising by the field and tying a B1G championship meet record in the process. The junior sprinted to the event title in 10.05 seconds, winning his first conference title. He followed up that performance with a third-place result in the 200m in a time of 20.17 seconds and finished the championships with three medals.
In the 400m hurdles, Minnesota freshman Ahmed Khadar gave the team four points as he covered the distance in 52.65 seconds to place fifth.
The Gophers turned in another championship effort in the pole vault as Jak Urlacher cleared a personal-best 5.51m (18-1). His mark tied the fourth best in program history and gave him a conference title.
