MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Ben Warian is holding firm inside the top 10 after posting a 1-under 69 in his second round of the Stanford Regional in Stanford Calif., on Tuesday.
Warian's round of 69 places him in a five-way tie for seventh place at 6-under par (65-69-134). He's currently tied with UCLA's Pablo Ereno (68-66-134) for the top spot among golfers that are not on the top-five teams on the leaderboard, which would send him to the NCAA Championships.
Big Ten-rival Illinois is the team leader after 36 holes with a combined score of 27-under par. Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon holds the top individual spot at 9-under par after the first two rounds.
Warian began his round firing off two straight birdies to go 2-under through his first two holes. He would bogey holes five and six, but bounced right back with an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole, finishing the front nine at 2-under par.
His back nine would yield two bogeys, on holes 10 and 17, and a birdie on the par-5 16th hole. In the second round, Warian played the par-5 holes at 5-under par, tying him for second best in the field for the day.
The low five teams and low individual not on those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., which will be held Friday, May 24 through Wednesday, May 29.
Warian will begin the final round of the Stanford Regional on hole No. 1 Wednesday, with his tee time set for 12:34 p.m. CT.
