5/23/2024 7:30:00 PM | Men's Golf
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota senior Ben Warian is set to tee off at the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif., starting Friday.
Warian will begin the first round of the NCAA Championships at 10:52 a.m. CT.
Representing the Maroon and Gold, Warian is competing as an individual after finishing the Stanford regional as the top individual not on a qualifying team. Warian finished in second place overall with a score of 11-under par (65-69-65–199) to punch his ticket into the tournament.
This is the first time since 2007 that the Gophers have been represented at the NCAA Championships, and the first time since Robb Kerr advanced in 1996 that an individual has represented the Gophers in the NCAA Championships.
The Format:
The NCAA Championships consists of three days of stroke play, beginning Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined.
That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 27 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 28, followed by finals on Wednesday, May 29.
Season Recap:
Entering this postseason, Warian was named to the All-Big Ten Second team, nabbed 11 top-20 finishes this season, including a win at the High Meadows Intercollegiate, where he set the program's 36-hole scoring record (128), 54-hole scoring record (198), and led the Gophers to their first win since 2022.
In his 12 stroke play events this season, Warian led the team in scoring average (70.00), rounds under par (8), score to par (-15), and low round of 18 (63).
