Gophers Ready for U.S. Olympic Team Trials

MINNEAPOLIS – Fourteen members of the Minnesota swimming and diving programs are looking to punch their tickets to this summer's Paris Olympics as they compete at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials and U.S. Olympic Diving Team Trials.
Twelve swimmers are set for action at the swimming trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., from June 15-23, while two divers are heading to the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., June 17-23.
Four-time NCAA champion Max McHugh headlines the Gopher swimming contingency, and he'll be joined by current Gophers William Christenson, Grace Drabot, Eliot Kennedy, Katie McCarthy, Chris Nagy, Kaiser Neverman, Ryan Slonac and Megan Van Berkom. Incoming freshmen Jacob Johnson, Joe Polyak and Livi Wanner are also scheduled to compete.
A swimmer must finish in the top two of a finals race and have an Olympic qualifying time in order to make the Olympic team (pending confirmation from the federation). Swimmers for freestyle relays are chosen by their times at the trials.
On the diving side, five-time national champion Sarah Bacon and rising junior Drew Bennett will represent the Maroon and Gold.
A diver needs to finish first or second after cumulative scores from the semifinal and final rounds. A synchro pair must finish in first place in order to qualify.
Live coverage of both the swimming and diving prelims will be available on Peacock (subscription required) with tape-delay coverage of swimming on USA Network. NBC will show the swimming finals each night, while the diving finals will have coverage from both NBC and USA Network.
