FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. Minnesota (1-1) closes out its non-conference schedule Saturday as it hosts Nevada (1-2) in the first ever meeting between the schools. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. with Big Ten Network providing television coverage. The game can also be heard statewide on the Gopher Radio Network.
2. Overall, the Golden Gophers are 14-3 against teams currently in the Mountain West Conference, good for a .824 all-time win percentage (see chart at bottom right), including a 10-1 record in Minneapolis. The Gophers have won 11 straight against Mountain West teams dating back to a 2004 victory over Colorado State. During that win streak, Minnesota has outscored MWC foes 371-229, resulting in an average final score of 34-21. More on the history against the Mountain West can be found on Page 4 of the notes.
3. Minnesota is coming off of a dominant 48-0 victory Saturday over Rhode Island. The shutout victory, the fourth to occur for the Gophers under P.J. Fleck, was the first for Minnesota since defeating Rutgers 31-0 on Oct. 29, 2022. Minnesota's 48 points were its most since a 49-7 win versus Colorado in 2022, and the 48-point margin of victory was its largest since a 62-10 win against Western Illinois in 2022. The 48-point shutout was the team's biggest since a 62-0 win over Temple in 2006. Minnesota did not allow Rhode Island to cross midfield until the 6:22 mark of the fourth quarter. Even then, the Rams did not advance past Minnesota's 48-yard line in the game. The Gophers held the Rams to had only six first downs, tied for the third fewest allowed by Minnesota since 1965, and forced four turnovers, including three interceptions.
4. Minnesota has handed the keys to the offense to sixth-year quarterback Max Brosmer, a transfer from the University of New Hampshire. A finalist for the 2023 Walter Payton Award and a Second Team All-American, Brosmer has been excellent so far in 2024, completing 37-of-51 passes for 436 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He's one of 25 quarterbacks in the country this year (and one of 14 in the Power 4) to attempt at least 51 passes and not throw a pick. His 72.5 percent completion percentage ranks 16th nationally, while Pro Football Focus ranks him fourth in the FBS with an adjusted completion percentage of 89.1. Adjusted completion percentage factors in drops, throw aways, spikes, batted passes and being hit as thrown to try to report a completion percentage that's more indicative of a quarterback's accuracy. More on Brosmer can be found on Page 4 of the notes.
5. The 2024 campaign is the eighth for head coach P.J. Fleck at Minnesota, where his record stands at 51-35. He is fifth in program history for overall wins, Big Ten wins (29) and games coached (86). Fleck's .593 win percentage is third best among Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games under their helm behind only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, '45-50). In his 12th season overall as a college head coach, Fleck is 81-57 (.587).
