The Gophers drop their first match of the season
MADISON - The University of Minnesota soccer team (8-1-1, 2-1-0 B1G) lost to the Wisconsin Badgers (5-2-2, 1-1-1 B1G) on Sunday afternoon 1-0 at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Despite the loss, the Golden Gophers led the Badgers in shots (16-6) and corners (18-4). Senior Khyah Harper took five chances on the day, while redshirt freshman Caroline Birdsell took four. Harper and midfielder Evelyn Calhoon were the only two Gophers that registered a shot on goal.
The Badgers scored in the 15th minute off a corner kick. Wisconsin delivered a ball to Erin Connolly who headed it up into the six yard box. Peighton Steffen took advantage of the bobbling ball and finished.
In the second half, Minnesota saw a number of dangerous chances off set pieces and corner kicks. Despite the strong offensive effort, the Gophers were unable to finish.
Minnesota continues its season on the road as it travels to No. 25 USC and RV (receiving votes) UCLA. The Gophers face the Trojans on Thursday at 8 p.m. and Bruins on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT, respectively.
