Weimer Claims Big Ten's Athlete of the Week Honor

The junior won the 2024 Roy Griak Invitational last Friday.

MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Ali Weimer was named the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. The Saint Michael, Minn., native won the 2024 Roy Griak Invitational on September 20. 
 
Weimer's victory at the Griak was her second victory of the season and of her career. In a time of 21:08.5, Weimer won the 6K event at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights and helped the Gophers claim the team win. The victory for the Golden Gophers was their third in the past six seasons at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. Weimer's victory is the first for the Maroon and Gold at the Roy Griak Invitational since Bethany Hasz claimed the crown in 2018. Weimer's win also improved on her previous best finish at the event, which was 26th back in 2022 in a time of 21:32.6. 
 
The honor for Minnesota is the first Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week since Bethany Hasz earned the distinction in 2021 after the Gopher great was the Big Ten's top finisher at the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational, clocking a 5K time of 16:31.6. 
 
The Maroon & Gold will send a majority of the squad to the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill., on October 4. Another portion of the team will compete at the Blugold Invitational in Eau Claire, Wis., which is also held on October 4.
