Summer Schmit Wraps Up 2024 Paralympic Games

PARIS - Early Thursday morning, former Gopher Summer Schmit concluded her 2024 Paralympic run after placing fourth in the 200 individual medley Para Swimming heats with a time of 2:44.63. The two-time U.S. Paralympian placed tenth overall in the preliminary round, earning her spot as a reserve in the finals.
 
In addition to the 200 IM, Schmit also swam in the 400 meter freestyle and the 100m breaststroke. In the 400m freestyle she swam a 4:56.77, placing fourth in her heat and ninth overall in the preliminary round. She was named a reserve for the finals as she missed qualifying by just one place. In the 100m breaststroke, she swam a 1:29.56. Schmit competed in the S9 class in this summer's games.
 
During her two seasons as a Gopher, she earned numerous awards and honors. This past season at the Minnesota Invite, Schmit broke the S9 Para American record in the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:14.48. As a freshman, Schmit was named the team's hardest worker and also earned an Outstanding Student-Athlete Award (GPA 3.50+). This past season, Schmit was recognized as a 2024 Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
 
During the 2022 World Championships, Schmit earned bronze in the 400m free, and fourth place in the 200m IM. Schmit also competed in the 2019 Parapan Am Games, where she earned silver in 200 IM and bronze in the 100m breast. 
 
Schmit was also a member of the U.S Paralympic team that competed in Tokyo in 2020. She placed fifth in the 200 IM, sixth in the 100m fly, and seventh in the 400m free.
