Season-high saves Saturday for the goalie
ROSEMONT, Ill. - For the third time in his career and first as a member of the Minnesota men's hockey team, goaltender Liam Souliere was chosen as a Big Ten Conference Star of the Week as he was named the Third Star by the league office Tuesday.
Â
Souliere was nearly perfect on the road for the Golden Gophers as he stopped 38-of-39 shots faced in two games at No. 11 Ohio State for a 0.78 goals-against average and a .974 save percentage. The graduate student played 16 of the final 17 minutes in Friday night's loss and made six saves before getting the start on Saturday. In the series finale, he held off the Buckeyes for the first 57:45 until a late power-play goal snapped his shutout bid and he finished by turning away a season-high 32 shots.
Â
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Souliere is now third nationally in goals-against average at 1.59 and fifth with a .938 save percentage, both of which lead the Big Ten Conference. He's allowed just seven goals in six appearances during league play.
Â
The Maroon and Gold have had a star of the week eight times this season coming from seven different players now that Souliere has joined the list. He along with Nathan Airey (Dec. 10), Brody Lamb (Dec. 3 and Oct. 29), Jimmy Snuggerud (Nov. 12), Sam Rinzel (Oct. 29), Jimmy Clark (Oct. 22) and Connor Kurth (Oct. 15) have all earned weekly honors this season.
