Eight Gophers Tally Multiple Points in 8-3 Win Over Mavericks

1/17/2025 9:44:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - The third-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team claimed another resounding victory over Minnesota State this season, scoring eight goals against the Mavericks for the second time in three meetings. The Gophers move to a 18-5-1 (12-4-1 WCHA) record with Friday's 8-3 victory at Ridder Arena.

For the second-straight game, Minnesota got on the board within the first two minutes of the game, as junior forward Josefin Bouveng tallied her eighth score of the season, assisted by Chloe Primerano and Abbey Murphy, just 1:01 into the first period. Minnesota State's Bella Shipley responded eight minutes later, tying the game at 1-1. Then, with less than a minute before second intermission, sophomore forward Emma Kreisz won a battle at the net to get the Gophers back ahead, assisted by Ava Lindsay and Peyton Hemp. The shots on goal were even at 11 through the end of the period.

The scoring accelerated during the second period. Redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy kicked things off just 20 seconds out of first intermission, scoring her team-leading 19th goal of the season, assisted by Ella Huber and Josefin Bouveng. It was the fastest goal scored in a period for Minnesota all season. Kianna Roeske brought the Mavericks back within one with a score 8:11 into the period. Five minutes later, senior forward Ella Huber notched her seventh goal of the season, assisted by Nelli Laitinen and Murphy, bringing the game to 4-2 in favor of the Gophers. Freshman defender Chloe Primerano, fresh off winning gold at the 2025 IIHF U18 Women's World Championships with Team Canada, followed up two minutes later with her third power play goal of the year, assisted by Bouveng and Murphy. Minnesota led 5-2 at the second intermission, out-shooting Minnesota State 16-8 in the second period.

The Gopher offense did not let up in the third period, scoring three more goals en route to a third-consecutive home victory. Freshman defender Gracie Graham scored back-to-back goals, the first being three minutes into the period, assisted by Allie Franco and Audrey Wethington, and the second being 8:44 into the period, again assisted by Wethington and Franco. Minnesota State's Alexis Paddington capitalized on a Maverick power play at the midpoint of the third, making it 7-3, before senior forward Peyton Hemp responded four-and-a-half minutes later with Minnesota's fifth shorthanded goal of the year, assisted by Huber. The score remained 8-3 through the period's end, cementing the Gophers' third win over the Mavericks this season.

Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark moved to a 14-3-1 record in net for the Gophers, making 25 saves against Minnesota State on Friday.

Quotable:
"Good win," said head coach Brad Frost. "We were a little sluggish in the first [period]. We got a big goal at the end of the first period, Emma Kreisz, and got one in the first shift of the second period, which kind of jump-started us. So anytime you can score a multitude of goals like that, it's a positive thing. All-in-all a great win, put the three points in the bank, and we know it's going to be even tougher tomorrow."

Additional Quotes from Coach Frost:
On Gracie Graham

"Gracie [Graham] has a real knack for jumping into the play, and getting up in the rush, and finding that third layer. [She] was able to do that here tonight on one of her goals, and then a really nice shot with a great screen by Emma Kreisz in front."
