MANKATO, Minn. - The third-ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team completed their second sweep of Minnesota State this season after a 5-2 victory on the road. Minnesota now sits at a 19-5-1 (13-4-1 WCHA) record.
For the third consecutive game, the Gophers got on the board within the first two minutes of the game, as junior forward Josefin Bouveng scored on the Gophers' only power play of the day, assisted by Abbey Murphy and Chloe Primerano. Bouveng also opened up scoring in last night's 8-3 contest. Junior forward Allie Franco added to the Minnesota lead with under three minutes remaining in the period, assisted by Lauren O'Hara and Ayla Puppe. The Gophers would head into first intermission with a 2-0 lead after out-shooting the Mavericks 11-6.
Redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy tallied her 20th goal of the season 3:18 into the second period, assisted by Ella Huber and Bouveng. It was Murphy's 90th career goal, making her the tenth Gopher in history to reach the 90-goal mark. Near the midpoint of the period, Josefin Bouveng scored her second goal of the day, assisted by Emma Kreisz, bringing the Minnesota lead to four. Alexis Paddington of Minnesota State responded with less than two minutes before second intermission, recording a power play goal to get the Mavericks on the board. The score remained 4-1 through the end of the second period.
Minnesota State brought the game back within two scores midway through the third period, thanks to a Julianna Gazdik unassisted goal. However, Josefin Bouveng would ultimately ice the game and clinch her second career hat trick with a goal on a Maverick empty net, assisted by Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber.
Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark collected her 15th win in net for the Gophers after making 19 saves on Saturday. Clark holds an overall 15-3-1 record on the season.
Quotable:
"Great win," said head coach Brad Frost. "On the road, hard place to play. Got out to a nice four-nothing lead, and it looked like we were in business, but credit [Minnesota State] for making a push there at the end. Josefin [Bouveng] with three beautiful passes to her, to get her hat trick. Just a really nice job overall. Again, great start with the power play goal there early, and so anytime we can jump out of the gates like that is great."
