Three Goals in Third Lift Gophers to 4-1 Victory Over Beavers

1/24/2025 3:32:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - The third-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team secured their 20th win of the season after routing Bemidji State 4-1 at Ridder Arena on Friday. The Gophers move to a 20-5-1 (14-4-1 WCHA) overall record and 4-0-0 against the Beavers on the season so far.

Both teams went scoreless in the first period, with Minnesota leading 16-7 in shots on goal and coming up empty on their lone power play of the game.

Senior forward Peyton Hemp lit the first lamp of the day seven minutes into the second period, assisted by Ella Huber. It was Hemp's 11th goal and Huber's 24th assist of the season. The Gophers kept the Beavers scoreless through the end of the period, successfully shutting down two Bemidji State power play opportunities along the way.

Minnesota saw much more success at the net in the third period, scoring three goals in the final 14 minutes of the game en route to a fifth-straight victory. Fifth-year forward Audrey Wethington brought the game to 2-0 with her second goal of the season, assisted by Sydney Morrow and Natalie Mlynkova. Bemidji State responded two minutes later with a Mya Headrick goal. Redshirt-senior forward Abbey Murphy tallied her first of two goals on the day with 3:15 remaining, assisted by Chloe Primerano and Ella Huber. Then, with under a minute left in the period, Murphy struck again on a Beaver empty-net, assisted by Krista Parkkonen. The goal cemented the final score at 4-1, with Minnesota finishing with 38 SOG to Bemidji State's 18.

Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark made 17 saves in her 16th victory between the pipes for the Gophers, recording a save percentage of .944 save percentage. She holds a 16-3-1 overall starting record.

Quotable:
"Great game," said head coach Brad Frost. "I thought we competed and played really hard. When we play Bemidji [State], they do such a good job of blocking shots, forcing you to work, forcing you to play the right way, and I thought our team did that. Getting that two goal lead, giving one up, and then [Abbey Murphy] answering with a beautiful shot to get back up two, and then getting the empty netter was a big deal for us. But overall, a really solid win here tonight."

Additional Quotes from Coach Frost:
On Field Trip Day

"[The crowd] was incredible. Having 2500-3000 screaming elementary kids, they brought the energy. They brought everything that we wanted them to bring, they were excited, they seemed to have a great time, and it seems to be something that we might want to continue to [host] in the future."

On Hockey Day Minnesota
"Anytime you can play on Hockey Day Minnesota is a big deal. Then, to be on TV and have the opportunity to play in front of so many people outside on a special day, we know it's going to be a great experience and we're looking forward to that."
