Minnesota wins 7 of 10 bouts, including 4 of 6 ranked matchups

MINNEAPOLIS – No. 7 Minnesota (5-1, 1-1 B1G) won seven of 10 matches, including four of the six ranked bouts, to beat No. 21 Michigan (4-2, 1-2 B1G), 25-10, Sunday at Maturi Pavilion in front of a crowd of 4,887, the team's largest draw since the 2023 match versus Iowa.

The dual started at 125 pounds where No. 5 Cooper Flynn got the Gophers started with a 5-2 decision over Wilfried Tanefeu. Flynn used a first-period takedown, second-period escape and riding time to pick up the first Big Ten win of his career and eighth victory in his last nine matches.

Eighteenth-ranked Tyler Wells picked up the first bonus-point win of the dual for Minnesota in a 12-3 victory over Nolan Wertanen at 133. Wells was up 3-1 through one period and 4-2 through two before pouring it on in the third. He added two more takedowns, including one in the closing seconds, and got an extra point as Wertanen was called for a third stall call. It was Wells' third major decision of the season as he improved to 9-2 on the year.

The lead grew to 10-0 for Minnesota as the Gophers won the first of six ranked matchups thanks to No. 8 Vance VomBaur's 4-2 decision over No. 11 Sergio Lemley at 141. Tied at 1-1 with less than a minute to go, VomBaur battled his way into a takedown with 45 seconds remaining. The victory improved VomBaur to 15-2 on the season and 5-2 against ranked opponents.

Michigan got its first win at 149 as Dylan Gilcher upset No. 19 Drew Roberts, 11-3, but Minnesota answered back before the break.

Ninth-ranked Tommy Askey sent the Gophers into intermission up 13-4 behind a 4-1 victory over Cameron Catrabone at 157 pounds. Askey got in on a double late in the first period to take a 3-0 lead, and he added an escape in the second to match VomBaur with a record of 15-2.

Coming out of intermission, Michigan cut the lead to 13-7 as No. 21 Beau Mantanona earned a 7-4 decision over ninth-ranked Andrew Sparks at 165. Like they did earlier in the dual, however, Minnesota responded with a win to extend its lead back.

Facing No. 28 Joseph Walker at 174, Minnesota's No. 24 Clayton Whiting broke through for his first ranked win of the season in a 6-3 decision. After a scoreless first period, Whiting started on bottom in period two but quickly got a reversal. Walker used a pair of escapes, though, to tie the match at 2-2. With 50 seconds left, the pair was scrambling before Whiting got to Walker's legs for the winning takedown.

At 184 pounds, No. 4 Max McEnelly went to overtime but kept his undefeated record intact in a 4-1 decision against No. 20 Jaden Bullock. Both wrestlers got escapes in regulation, but it was McEnelly who scored the sudden-victory takedown 40 seconds into the extra session. The victory, McEnelly's third over a ranked opponent this season, bumps his record to 12-0 this year and 27-0 in his career.

The Wolverines got their third and final win of the dual at 197 as No. 3 Jacob Cardenas posted an 8-3 win against No. 9 Isaiah Salazar. Keeping it to a decision, though, clinched the dual victory for Minnesota.

Top-ranked Gable Steveson put the exclamation mark on the match with a pin at heavyweight. He handed No. 10 Josh Heindselman his first loss of the year by putting his shoulders to the mat at 1:46. It was Steveson's first win by fall this year and the 14th of his career. He kept his bonus point rate at 100 percent (one pin, four tech falls) and increased his team point per match rate to 5.20.

Minnesota returns to action next weekend with a pair of road duals. Friday night sees the Gophers travel to Wisconsin at 7 p.m., while the weekend wraps up Sunday at Northwestern at noon. Both matches will stream on B1G+.
