Gophers Defeat Hawkeyes, 72-67, For First Win In Iowa Since 2015

1/21/2025 10:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia scored 20 points and Femi Odukale added a season-high 18 points and team-high eight rebounds on his 24th birthday, as Minnesota (10-9, 2-6 Big Ten) earned its first win at Carver Hawkeye Arena since 2015 with a 72-67 victory over Iowa (12-7, 3-5 B1G).

Garcia recorded 20 or more points for the fourth-straight game and for the 12th time this season. He was 7-of-15 from the field and added six rebounds and two assists. Odukale scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, which saw the Gophers build a 17-point lead before Iowa rallied late to cut it to three points with less than a minute left. Odukale added four assists and a blocked shot in 35 minutes.

The win was Minnesota's first at Carver Hawkeye Arena since a 64-59 win over Iowa on Feb. 12, 2015, and it's the Gophers' second win in a row following last Thursday's buzzer-beating 84-81 overtime victory versus No. 20 Michigan.

Mike Mitchell Jr. finished with eight points, five rebounds, and two steals for the Gophers, while Lu'Cye Patterson had six boards, four points, and four assists, and Frank Mitchell came off the bench to finish with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, and a block. Parker Fox had six points and two boards for Minnesota, which made 24-of-58 (.414) field goals, including 7-of-24 (.292) three-pointers, and 17-of-24 (.708) free throws. Minnesota finished with a 38-33 rebounding edge.

Payton Sandfort and Owen Freeman each scored 21 points for the Hawks, which made 28-of-61 (.459) field goals, but were just 3-of-21 (.143) from three-point range.

Minnesota led 6-4 early on a layup by Mitchell Jr., a pair of free throws by Garcia, and a tip-in by Odukale, as Iowa started the game 1-of-7 from the field and missing its first four three-point attempts. Odukale gave the Gophers an 8-4 lead, and the Hawkeyes scored four straight to tie the score, but three-pointers from Isaac Asuma, Mitchell Jr., and Garcia during an 11-2 run extended the lead to 19-10 and forced an Iowa timeout. A putback layup by Mitchell gave Minnesota an 11-point  lead, as the Hawkeyes were held scoreless for almost four minutes. Iowa battled back with a 6-0 run, but Kadyn Betts hit a three from the corner with 7:09 left in the half for a 24-16 advantage. The Hawkeyes scored again, making it eight points in less than two minutes, and Ben Johnson called a timeout. Iowa made it a 6-0 run to pull within two at 24-22, but Odukale and Fox scored on layups to extend the lead back to 28-22 with 3:36 left. Two Fox free throws put the Gophers ahead 30-24, and Iowa then cut the margin to two, but Garcia's layup at the buzzer sent Minnesota to the locker room with a 32-28 lead.

Garcia led the Gophers with nine first-half points, with Mitchell Jr. scoring five, Odukale having four points and five rebounds, and Fox scoring four. The Gophers were 12-of-31 (.387) from the field, including 4-of-14 (.286) from three-point range, and 4-of-4 at the line, while owning a 20-13 rebounding advantage at the half. Iowa was 13-of-28 (.464) from the field, but 0-of-7 from long distance, and 2-of-2 at the stripe. Sandfort led the Hawks with 10 points.

Mitchell Jr. opened the second half by knocking down a trey, giving the Gophers a 35-28 lead, and Garcia added a three-pointer from the corner to make it a 10-point advantage. The Hawkeyes cut Minnesota's lead to 38-31, but strong defense and rebounding by the Gophers and a couple Garcia layups stretched it to 42-31 with 15:42 left. Mitchell added a couple layups, making it an 8-0 Gophers run and a 46-31 lead. Iowa used a 5-0 run, including its first made three-pointer in 13 attempts, to trim the lead to 46-36, but Odukale dunked on a feed from Fox to push the lead back to 12. Fox hit 2-of-3 free throws for a 53-42 lead with 10:12 remaining, but Iowa connected on its second three to pull within eight points and force a Minnesota timeout. A three-point play and a three-pointer by Odukale were just what the Gophers needed, as they extended their lead to 59-45 with 8:23 left. Garcia scored on a layup to stretch the advantage to 61-46, and a pair of free throws gave him 20 points and stretched the lead to 17. Iowa responded with a quick 6-0 run, forcing a couple Gophers turnovers, to trim the margin to 63-52, forcing Minnesota to use its final timeout with 5:06 left. Patterson hit a jumper in the lane to end Iowa's run, and two Odukale free throws kept Minnesota up by 13 at 67-54. A 9-0 Iowa run trimmed Minnesota's lead to four points, but Odukale hit a free throw to make it 68-63 with 1:12 left. The Hawkeyes scored again to pull within three, but Odukale hit a pair of FTs with 0:51 remaining for a 70-65 edge. Iowa scored with 30.9 seconds left and called timeout. Garcia missed a pair of free throws, but after Iowa missed the front end of a one-and-one, Mitchell grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 10.1 seconds left. He made both free throws, and Minnesota held on for the win.

Minnesota returns to Williams Arena to play host to Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 3:00 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
