Dawson Garcia scored 21 points, his sixth-straight game with 20 or more points, but Minnesota (11-10, 3-7 Big Ten) fell in a 73-51 loss to No. 7/7 Michigan State (18-2, 9-0 B1G) in East Lansing, Mich.

Garcia, who leads the Big Ten with 14 games with 20-plus points, made 9-of-16 field goals and added five rebounds, one assist, and a blocked shot. Isaac Asuma finished with eight points, three rebounds, and two steals, Lu'Cye Patterson had eight points and four assists, Mike Mitchell Jr. had eight points, and Femi Odukale had five assists, four points, three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. Minnesota made 21-of-51 (.412) field goals, including 6-of-17 (.353) three-pointers, and 3-of-5 free throws, but were outrebounded 40-22.

The Spartans, who won their 13th consecutive game, were led by 12 points from Tre Holloman, while Jaden Akins and Xavier Booker each added 10 points, and Carson Cooper had nine points and 11 rebounds. MSU finished the game shooting 44.6 percent (25-of-56), including 8-of-25 treys, and 15-of-20 free throws.

Michigan State jumped out to a 6-0 lead, as Minnesota was held scoreless until Mitchell Jr. knocked down a three-pointer with 14:10 left in the half. That three-pointer allowed Mitchell Jr. to reach 500 points at Minnesota. The Spartans extended the lead to 11-3 with a 5-0 run, before Asuma connected on a three from the corner to cut it to 11-6, but MSU put together another 5-0 run to lead 16-6 at the third media timeout. The Gophers opened the game 2-of-13 (.154) from the field with seven turnovers in the first 12 minutes. Asuma hit a baseline jumper to pull the Gophers within 16-8, but the Spartans once again put together a 5-0 run to lead 21-8 with 5:04 remaining. Garcia got on the board with a layup to cut it to 21-10, and then added a layup, but missed an opportunity at a three-point play to trim the deficit to nine. Another MSU run, this time 13-0, stretched the Spartans' advantage to 34-12 before Garcia scored on a floater from the right side with 0:43 left. Garcia's bank shot just before the buzzer sent the teams to the locker room with the Spartans leading, 36-16.

Garcia led the Gophers with eight points at the half, with Asuma adding five points, Mitchell Jr. with three, and Odukale leading with four assists. Minnesota made 7-of-22 (.318) field goals, including 2-of-6 three-pointers, but was outrebounded 21-12. Holloman made 4-of-5 three-pointers, including three during the late 13-0 run, to lead MSU with 12 points. The Spartans made 13-of-31 (.419) field goals, including 6-of-15 (.400) three-pointers, and 4-of-6 free throws.

Minnesota opened the second half with a 7-2 run, including five points from Mitchell Jr., to trim the deficit to 38-23. But the Spartans stretched the lead back to 18 with their seventh three-pointer of the game. Patterson scored and Garcia hit a jumper from just inside the arc to pull within 43-27 with 14:32 remaining, but a 6-0 Spartans run extended MSU's lead back to 22 points at the second media timeout. A dunk by Garcia, Asuma's second three-pointer of the game, and a Frank Mitchell putback jam cut it to 49-34. Two more jumpers from Garcia made it 52-38 with 8:16 remaining, and Garcia's three-pointer with 7:27 left had the Gophers within 13 at 54-41. Garcia added a pair of free throws to make it a personal run of nine-straight points to keep Minnesota within 56-43, but the Spartans countered with an 8-0 run before Patterson scored in the lane with 5:06 remaining. Patterson cut the score to 66-48 with a three-pointer, but the Spartans remained unbeaten in Big Ten play.

The Gophers return home to play host to Washington on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11:00 a.m. CST on Big Ten Network.
