18th Meeting: Minnesota trails all-time series, 8-9
Last Meeting: Nov. 21, 2018 (MN W, 68-66)
* excludes vacated games
STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball program is back at Williams Arena on Saturday to host Washington at 11 a.m. It marks the 18th meeting between the two schools and the first as Big Ten opponents. The last time the Huskies visited Williams Arena dates back to Dec. 20, 1989 when the Gophers won, 77-60.
• It's the first contest between the two teams since 2018, which came during the Vancouver Showcase finale. Former Gopher Gabe Kalscheur made a contested 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left for the 68-66 win. Jordan Murphy led Minnesota with 18 points, all in the second half, and 11 rebounds. Amir Coffey added 17 points.
• The Gophers are looking to return to the win column after a 73-51 loss to No. 7 Michigan State Tuesday. Dawson Garcia scored 21 points, but the Spartans went on to go unbeaten in 13 straight games and 9-0 in league play. The Spartans led from the get-go, opening with a 6-0 lead, and never looked back. Mike Mitchell Jr. scored his 500th Gopher point in the loss, while he, Isaac Asuma and Lu'Cye Patterson all had eight points.
• Dawson Garcia's 21 points at Michigan State extended his scoring streak. He has now had 20 or more points in six straight games. It is the longest streak by a Minnesota player since Kris Humphries had an eight-game streak in 2003-04. Garcia and Humphries's streaks are the two longest streaks by any Golden Gopher this century.
• Dawson Garcia was named Big Ten's Player of the Week. It marked the second time Garcia has acclaimed the award and first in the 2024-25 campaign. Last week, Garcia averaged 25.5 points to lead the Gophers to a pair of wins at Iowa and home against No. 15 Oregon on Saturday. Against the Hawkeyes last Tuesday, Garcia posted a team-best 20 points as the Gophers garnered their first win in Iowa City since 2015. He followed that performance with 31 points against No. 15 Oregon as the Gophers won back-to-back home games against ranked opponents.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON
• Washington (10-10, 1-8 B1G) is playing its first game in a week with its last action on Jan. 24 in a 65-60 loss at home to UCLA. The Huskies earned a home win against Maryland, 75-69, to start off the January Big Ten slate.
• The Huskies are led by Great Osobor, who followed head coach Danny Sprinkle from Montana State, Utah State and now Washington. He leads the team in points (310), points per game (15.5), field goals (106), rebounds per game (8.6), assists (64) and steals (42). Tyler Harris averages 11.5 points and a team-best 22 blocks, while Zoom Diallo averages 10.9. DJ Davis has a team-best 28 threes.
• As a team, the Huskies are averaging 71.7 points, while allowing 71.8. They are shooting 43.9 from the field and 32.1 from the arc. Averaging 34 rebounds a game, Washington also has 79 blocks and 142 steals. They also have 238 turnovers.
