Back-to-back gold medals for Team USA

OTTAWA, Ontario - Golden Gophers men's hockey players Oliver Moore and Brodie Ziemer along with associate head coach Steve Miller helped the United States to a gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship Sunday night. The Americans rallied for a thrilling, 4-3 come-from-behind victory in overtime against Finland in front of nearly 17,000 people at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.

Ziemer finished fifth on the team in scoring behind seven points in seven games, including an assist on the gold-medal-clinching goal against Finland on Sunday. The freshman tallied two goals in his tournament debut against Germany (Dec. 26), starting a three-game point streak for the Chaska, Minn., native. He had a point in five of his seven appearances with two multi-point games following a two-assist effort in the quarterfinal matchup with Switzerland (Jan. 2).

Moore, who served as an alternate captain for the team, put together a five-point event with a goal and four assists as the Minnesota sophomore completed back-to-back titles in the Red, White, and Blue after winning in 2024. He had points in four of five games leading up to the finals, while three of his five total points came during the medal round aided by a two-assist game versus Switzerland (Jan. 2) in the quarterfinals.

Behind the American bench for the eighth time in his career, Gophers' associate head coach Steve Miller helped guide the team to another title as an assistant coach. Miller oversaw the U.S. defensemen and led its group of penalty killers.

The Maroon and Gold have been represented by at least one player at the tournament in 46 of the 49 years it has been played, including now 11 players that have claimed a gold medal with Moore as the only Gophers' skater to win the event twice.

It marked the first time in history that Team USA has won back-to-back titles and the seventh overall gold medal at the IIHF World Junior Championship, with the previous six coming in 2024, 2021, 2017, 2013, 2010 and 2004.

The University of Minnesota in partnership with Minnesota Sports and Events and Minnesota Wild will host next year's IIHF World Junior Championship at 3M Arena at Mariucci and the Xcel Energy Center from Dec. 26, 2025-Jan. 5, 2026. Ticket packages are currently available HERE.
